The art of antiquing wood is done by steel brushes, where you remove the soft wood from the wood and leave the hard wood intact. The soft wood are the summer wood and the hard wood is the winter wood. This product is sold in our web store and it attaches to a 1/2″ drill chuck so you can run it in a drill. We also offer air tools in our web shop for doing this work but sometimes a small head to attach to your own drill makes the work easier when its just a small job that needs to be done.

As can be seen in this small sample what the steel brushes do are making linear lines in the wood to make the wood look old. The longer the tool is used over the wood the deeper the groves in the wood will get. After using the steel brushes a clean up process with flap wheel abrasives brushes are recommended.

Working with flap-wheels

Imagine you have taken a great deal of time and care to create an intricate profile for a special project. No matter if this profile were created by hand, by manual router, by a CNC style machine or a molder. The next step is going to be how to sand this intricate profile without destroying the detail.
I know of only one method that works well, the flap wheel head.

Flap wheel heads are designed to be flexible. This flexibility allows the head to conform to the shape being sanded. When a flap wheel head of the proper configuration is applied to your material multiple things will happen.

In Raw Wood Sanding

First, the process of flap wheel sanding denibbs your product. This is to remove the small fibers that pop up when sanded in any other way or when any type of chemical or water is applied to the surface of the material. These fibers if not removed will raise up and set in a dried position causing a rough primer or stain and seal coat. This will require additional sanding time being needed between coats to achieve a smooth top coat. Utilizing a flap wheel head will remove these fibers resulting in much less sanding time between coats.
In some cases less finish materials will be required because there is less fiber to cover.

Second, you will benefit from the fact that flap wheel heads will insure a uniform pore opening in the material. Uniform pore openings result in uniform color balance throughout the work surface.

Third, you will slightly soften the sharp edges. Softening these edges eliminates the area that is almost impossible for stain, sealer, or paint to find enough mass to adhere. Incorporating a slight radius in these areas eliminates the weak area in a finish. It also makes sealer or primer sanding much easier in that you are less likely to sand through the finish in these areas.

In Sealer or Primer Sanding

First, you will have a more thorough and uniform scuff of the sealer or primer coat. This scuffing will ensure a superior bond between seal or primer coat and the top coat.

Second, if the material was properly sanded in the raw, you should now be able to flap wheel sand the sealer or primer coat without burning through or white lining your product.

Third, a more uniform and overall higher quality of the finish.

Biggest benefit in both raw and sealer or primer sanding? You increase quality while decreasing LABOR!

Setting Up a Flap Wheel Head after the Molder

Sanding your molding with a flap wheel head after the molder will help decrease surface markings and aid in creating a better product. In working with molders it is critical to keep spindle tooling clean, sharp, and well balanced. With this combination and making sure to not over drive feed speeds a decent profile can be produced on most molders.

The next step is proper sanding of the material after the shapes have been created. I have found only two methods that will work well for sanding profiled material. One is using a shaped wheel that matches the profile of your product. These shaped wheels are similar in nature to a grinding wheel. These shaped wheels can remove a fair amount of material and will help with removing tooling marks but will not denibb your surface nor help with color balance. You will also need a head to match each profile you want to create.

Enter the flap wheel head. Flap wheel heads are designed to be flexible in order to conform themselves to the shape being sanded. This has the unique benefit of very small changes in machine or head settings to accommodate different profiles.

When sanding molding with a flap wheel head you must understand that only a small amount of material is going to be removed. Sanding in this way will do no harm to your profile but only a limited amount of tooling marks will be removed. If you start with good tooling and produce a good clean molding cut then flap wheel sanding will finish sand your product to the point of being ready to apply stain or primer.

Building your own flap wheel head as an attachment on the out feed end of the molder could be your solution. With today’s availability of inexpensive motors and controllers give it consideration.

In most cases a little fabrication work to mount a motor or two with heads on the out feed end of your molder is not difficult to do. You will want to make sure the heads can be adjusted up and down and also the ability to tilt the head can be very useful. Up and down adjustment is a must to accommodate different thicknesses of material. The ability to tilt your heads will help when running a profile that is considerably thicker along one edge than the other. Just keep in mind the need for more heads as feed rates increase. It will take approximately two heads for up to 20 feet per minute feed rates. Using four heads will get you up to approximately 60-70 feet per minute feed rates and still give good quality sanding. You will also want to make sure the heads are counter rotating. Counter rotation insures that one direction of spin will lift the fibers while the other direction of rotation successfully removes the lifted fibers.

Your end result will be a better finish that required less sanding between coats and used less chemicals to get there.

Reversing Of Spindle On A QuickWood Machine

It is now possible to reverse the spindles on all QuickWood machine even older QuickWood machines. Reversing the spindles gives you the benefits of using 2 different grits as you sand with the QuickWood Quick-Strip System. You can use a p180 grit for your white wood sanding and a p320 grit for your sealer sanding. Its a very cheap conversion and it something most customers with an older QuickWood machine should look into as the benefits with two different grits are numerous.

* Use a coarse grit to open the grain for a good stain color.

* Use a coarse grit in white wood for better edge break

* Use a coarse grit in white wood for better over all sanding

Getting The Most Out Of Your QuickWood Machine

QuickWood finishing sanding machines has been sold since the early 1990 but at the time the machines where only made to use one sandpaper and customers would frequently have to change sandpaper on the machine to do both pre sanding and sealer sanding with the same machine. In 2002 QuickWood started making brushes that could hold abrasives on both sides of the brush making the change of abrasives to do diffent kind of sanding a thing of the past.

This style of abrasive would work when the machine was build to revers the spindles a very simple fuction when the spindles where run off an frequency inverter. Even older style Pro or machines like the CD2-300 moulding sander from QuickWood would be very easy to convert over to reversing of the spindles so the double side brush could be used with 2 different grit abrasives.

Now when you want to revers a spindle with out a frequency drive or a machine that uses a mecanical inverter for the changing of the speeds of the spindles, that would be the RO series from QuickWood the conversion would take place at the motor. We know that when two wires in a 3phase motor is changed the motor will run in revers. This will change the directions of the spindles and reversing can be used for Ro models also.

Call your local QuickWood representative and see if you machine can be made to use the double sided brush so you can use the two different grit abrasive.

When using two different grit abrasives on the machine a better pre sanding and sealer sanding can be done with the correct grit. No more changing abrasives for different sanding applications.

We can now introduce the Pro 800 Vac 32" 4 spindle sander, that is available again but this time with many upgrades. Reversing of spindles for use of 2 different grits when sanding, frequency inverter for all speeds. QuickWood Pro Series Ready

The Pro Series Sander from QuickWood is now available again with the following great changes to the already best seller from QuickWood. The machine now comes with inverters for all speeds and right and left turning spindles for the ability to use two different grit abrasives. In most cases a customer would use grit 180 for white wood sanding and a grit 220 or 320 for sealer sanding. Before the change of abrasives grit was a pain for the customers as spindles had to be removed from the sander. Now its as easy as turning a switch and a different grit of sand paper can be used. The machine comes with 2 abrasives grits of sand paper, freight to the customers door and 2 days of training. The Pro 1100 Vac will accept 43" parts going though the machine and we run at speeds of up to 46 feet per min. Normal feed speed is around 15-20 feet per min.

The new design Pro 1100 Vac comes with a new vacuum hold down system improved 50% from the suction on older Pro machines and it also comes with electrical panel on the side of the machine and controls on the machine it self.

The new digital read out panel where each speed on the machine has it's own digital read out. Belt speed, spindle speed, height and carrousel speed. Its all mounted right where the operator is standing with the machine.

The machine is manufactured in our factory in Italy.

Brush Sanding Is The Latest Trend In Woodworking

Sanding in woodworking shops has gone from hard contour wheels that had to be shaped to the reverse profile of the piece being sanded. The process is very time consuming as a custom woodworking shop has a few of each sharp and size and changing would have to change sanding wheel all the time.

In 1990 a new sanding system was developed where sandpaper where back up by a Tampico brush, this system game the sandpaper for force and when flex around a profile the brush would support the sand paper down in the profile. This style of sanding called brush sanding or brush back sanding would gain popularity for the next 10 year and in 2000 a new system again would make the brush system obsolete.

A smart system came along where the brush could be reused many times over as only the sandpaper should be changed when needed. As the replacement cost of the brush sanding systems fell the popularity of brush sanding grew in the woodworking community and in some cases in the metal fabricating shops. Brush sanding abrasives have the following advantages over hard wheel or sanding belts. A brush sanding heads will contour or change to any profile, it will only sand the top surface of the profile and just slightly break any sharp edges on the profile. This sanding is often referred to as profile sanding or finishing sanding.

Small knife marks in the moulding can be removed with brush sanding as long as the knife marks are not too deep. Removal of loose fibers on the molded piece will help on the overall look of the stain color when the work piece is being stained and sealed.

The different between brush sanding and hand sanding is the uniformity of the stain color. If you hand sand something different pressure is use to sand in different spots this will give the wood a different stain color because of over sanding in some spots. Brush sanding will use its flexibility to sand the same in every spot and with more pressure by the operator the brush sander will not sand much more and there by leaving an even stain color.

Brush sanding will however not be as aggressive as a contoured wheel and will not be able to remove the very deep scratches and other imperfections on your contoured piece. In the sealer sanding or scuff sanding brush sanding is also very easy to use as gentle sanding can be achieved by using the slower RPM (Rounds per Minute) on the brush head. Grit 220 or 320 is normally used for sealer sanding with a brush sanding head. Brush sanding is a very cost effective way of sanding contoured work pieces where a flexible medium is needed for sanding of an uneven piece.

The machine will remove light knife marks and prep the wood for staining and sealing.The prep is very important to the moulding as uniformity in the stain color comes from this prep. The prep is a uniform sanding of the top surface of the whole moulding. The top and the bottom of the moulding will get the same sanding and by doing this the same uniform stain color is achieved. Brush sanding mouldings in this way prepares the moulding not just for the staining but also for the next step, namely the sealer coat.

When the sealer coat is applied to the moulding the pre sanding with the Quickwood moulding sander has made sure that no sharp edges are on the moulding. This does not mean that the brush sanding distorts the profile it only means that knife sharp edges are slightly broken. The rules are that a sharp edge will not be able to absorb very much stain or sealer and thereby be very weak and a possible point where the homeowner would breach the sealer coats and expose raw wood. To make the edges as strong as possible a light break is perform in the raw wood sanding so the stain and sealer coats sits better on the edges.After stain and sealer has be applied and the moulding has dried the Quickwood brush sander is now ready to do sealer sanding on the moulding.

The speed of the spindles are reduce for a softer sanding and again speed of up to 50 feet per min can be reached for sealer sanding on the mouldings.The machine can be setup with 150 grit for pre sanding and 220 grit for sealer sanding. Any grit from 80 to 320 is available for the machine. Special sanding applications like Rustic look, Antic look or South West look can also be achieved by using steel brushes or stiff tynex brushes.The moulding sanding machine comes with 2 top heads, made with variable speed to change the aggressiveness of the sanding on the moulding. One sander on the left side and one sander on the right side also with variable speed control. Driven rollers conveys the product though the machine at a variable speed from 10 to 50 feet per min.Pressure rollers are adjustable in height together by a hand wheel crank, minimum length is 14 inch.This machine will take care of bottlenecks in the production of moulding as finish sanding and sealer sanding is now an easy task to do.

Non directional sanding on metal sheets

The non-directional sanding on metal sheets are done by automatic machine from QuickWood. The machine will make a non directional finish on the metal. The non directional finish can be used for design solutions or as part of a product where a linier finish would not be accepted. QuickWood's new Quick-Strip Sanding System was introduced 2 years ago and is now a main part of many companies sanding operation. The brush back abrasives are use in both automatic machines and manual hand help machines. The sandpaper is separate from the brush, and after the sandpaper is used for 500-1000 hours in automatic operation it can be slit out from the brush and replaced. The brushes are reusable and can stand 5-7 changes of abrasive. This makes the Quick-Strip system the most economical brush backed abrasives system in the industry. New Classic Cup Brush Sander from QuickWood

The new Cup Sander will do pre sanding and sealer sanding on kitchen cabinet doors. With 11 Cup brush heads spinning over the work piece a very good pre sanding can be obtained on kitchen cabinet doors, furniture parts and other 3 dimensional parts.
The machine is very compact and will take up very little room in the shop or in a pre-existing finishing line. The heads can be equipped with QuickWood Quick-Strip abrasive and each cup brush will be able to reveres direction. We can use two different grits on the machine for better sanding of white wood and sealer parts.
The machine is ideal for the smaller shop with a $50,000 budget for a finishing sander and the larger finishing lines where a small machine will fit well in existing lines.

New Elite sanders from QuickWood

The New Elite series from QuickWood is out in an Elite 1100 Vacuum and Elite 1400 Vacuum model. An Elite 800 Vacuum and Elite 1300 Vacuum will follow at the IWF 2007 show. The Elite Series is equipped with Touch Screen controls and automatic programs for easy operation. The other big benefit the Elite come with is the reversible spindles that allow the customer to use 2 different sandpaper grits inside the machine, for easy white wood and sealer sanding. Many other finishing sanders finds a happy medium between white wood grit sandpaper and a sealer grit sandpaper only to end up with a happy medium and not the perfect grit for either operation. This problem is now solved in the Elite series from Quickwood. The next great thing about the Elite Series is a very strong Vacuum system that holds even small frames and draw fronts firmly in place while sanded.
